Horizontal mounting position – steplessly variable torque

Magnetic particle clutches of type 14.502 and magnetic particle brakes of type 14.512 are electromagnetically controllable friction clutches or brakes in which a special magnetic powder (highly abrasion-resistant, specially alloyed iron powder) serves as the friction lining. The steplessly variable torque and the smooth, jerk-free slip are major advantages.

Highlights

  • Torque can be adjusted using the current
  • Installation and operation in horizontal shaft position
  • Wide range of versions for different applications

Functional description

The loose magnetic powder is located in the air gap between the outer rotor and the inner rotor. This fine-grained iron powder forms magnetic chains depending on the level of electromagnetic excitation, thus transmitting the torque. The level of excitation determines the rigidity of these powder chains and, therefore, also the amount of torque that can be transmitted.

Magnetic particle clutches of type 14.502 are constructed in such a way that the field coil is located in the rotating outer rotor. Therefore, slip rings are required for the power supply. The drive force is primarily supplied via the outer rotor. The outer rotor has a sufficient number of threaded holes bored in the axial direction for connecting to the driving element. Output is by means of the inner rotor, which has a keyway in its hollow shaft. Input and output can also be reversed.

Fixing the outer rotor in place turns a clutch into a brake (type 14.512). Power is supplied via flat tongue plugs on the outer rotor. If the outer rotor is fixed in place, the slip rings for supplying power are not required.

Magnetic particle clutches and brakes are designed for continuous slip applications as long as the heat dissipation limit is not exceeded. The clutch or brake slips smoothly without jerking when the set torque is exceeded.

Suitable control equipment is required to control the magnetic particle clutches and brakes.
